Police in Houston, Texas, are searching for a gunman who walked into a man’s garage on Halloween night possibly wearing a “Michael Myers” mask from the movie Halloween and shot and killed him, authorities said.

On Thursday, Oct. 31, at about 11:15 p.m., a child called 911 to report that her father had been shot at their home on Hawks Nest Drive in Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement sent to PEOPLE.

EMS and HCSO deputies raced to the scene and found an adult male lying in his garage, unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said.

Two young children were found inside the house, unharmed.

The suspect was nowhere to be seen, the sheriff's office said.

The man who was shot “could not be saved and died in his garage,” police said in the statement.

Detectives spoke to witnesses and reviewed security videos from neighboring homes and learned that “a possible suspect was seen walking in the area wearing a Halloween-themed Michael Myers mask,” the sheriff’s office said.

Multiple neighbors heard the gunshots, including the children, who were inside the home when the shooting took place.

A third child, a toddler, was staying with a relative and was not home when the shooting took place, ABC 13 reports.

The killing is under investigation, and the motive, along with the suspect shooter's identity, is unknown at this time.

Police did not identify the victim.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the mother of the three children, who was also the estranged wife of the victim, had been killed in a homicide in August of 2024.

"Detectives are working to establish if both incidents are related," the sheriff's office said.

The children were released to their grandmother.

Authorities are continuing to investigate.
